Visiting the Grand Baie Social Welfare Centre

Our journey to Mauritius in May 2018 was not just a return to paradise, but a return to a place that held deep emotional resonance for us. Mauritius had been the setting of our 2007 wedding, and while we cherished the memories of its natural beauty, we also remembered the juxtaposition of its idyllic scenery with the visible poverty in some of its surrounding villages. On this trip, we were determined to give back in whatever small way we could.

Planning Our Visit

Before our departure, we were in close contact with Merville Beach Hotel, where we had stayed during our wedding. The hotel staff connected us with the local Social Welfare Centre in Grand Baie that was in desperate need of supplies.

We learned that the centre required:

  • Clothes for people of all ages
  • Nappies for infants
  • School supplies such as notebooks, pens, and paper
  • Recreational items like footballs

Arriving in Mauritius

After touching down in the stunning island nation, we spent a few days settling in and soaking up the sun. During this time, we met with two wonderful representatives from Merville Beach: Jamie Law, the Guest Relations Manager, and Maja Kranjc, the Marketing Manager. Their passion for the local community was palpable, and their guidance was instrumental in turning our ideas into action.

Shopping for the Community

With the hotel driver accompanying us, the four of us made our way to the “locals’ market”. This bustling marketplace offered a glimpse into everyday Mauritian life, and we were able to purchase clothes, school supplies, nappies, and toys at affordable prices. By the end of the shopping trip, our SUV was packed to the brim.

Visiting the Community Centre

The following day, we made our way to the community centre in Grand Baie. The manager of the centre greeted us warmly, visibly moved by our gesture. As we unloaded the supplies and arranged them on tables, the excitement among the staff and children was infectious.

A Heartfelt Performance

We were invited into the main room of the centre, where the children had prepared a delightful performance of singing and dancing. Their enthusiasm and joy were palpable, leaving us deeply moved. Between songs, the children shared shy smiles and laughter, creating a moment we will never forget.

Joining a Football Match

After the performance, I was invited to join a football match with the children on the tarmac pitch. Their skills were astonishing, especially considering many played barefoot. The camaraderie and laughter on the pitch created a memory I will cherish forever.

The Impact of Your Support

Every item we donated and every rupee we spent was made possible by the generous contributions of friends, family, and supporters. The gratitude of the centre’s staff and the smiles on the children’s faces were a testament to the impact of our collective effort.

Reflection

Our visit to the community centre in Grand Baie reaffirmed the importance of giving back and underscored the resilience and joy of the human spirit. Mauritius is more than just a tourist paradise; it is a community of people whose warmth and strength deserve to be celebrated.

How You Can Help

If you’re inspired by our experience, here are ways you can make a difference:

  • Donate Supplies: Clothes, school equipment, and toys are always appreciated by community centres.
  • Volunteer: Spend time with local organisations and offer your time or skills.
  • Spread Awareness: Share stories like this to inspire others to contribute to communities in need.
  • Raise Funds: A little goes a long way, especially when used wisely in local markets.

Closing Thoughts

Our visit to the community centre in Grand Baie was not just an act of charity; it was a journey of mutual learning and connection. We encourage everyone to look beyond the surface of the places they visit and find ways to give back. Together, we can create a world where kindness and compassion transcend borders.

Thank you to everyone who supported our efforts, we can see the impact this small gesture had on on the individuals, as well as community as a whole.

Kindest regards,
Jason
