Mother of Peace: A Haven for Vulnerable Children

Mother of Peace was first established in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1989 by twin sisters Beverley Olbers and Rene van Meygaarden (deceased). Since its inception, the organisation has expanded to include two additional communities: one in Zimbabwe, founded in 1994, and another in Illovo, established in 2002.

Their Mission

Mother of Peace Communities is a non-profit organisation dedicated to restoring traditional family life for orphaned and vulnerable children, guided by the values and teachings of the Catholic Church. They believe that every child has the fundamental right to safety, belonging, and a voice. Their ultimate goal is to provide a nurturing and supportive environment where children can heal, grow, and develop into responsible members of society.

Mother of Peace Johannesburg

Founded in response to the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS crisis in Johannesburg, Mother of Peace Johannesburg is currently led by South Africans Valerie Barbeito, Patricia Prinsloo, and Beverley Olbers. Their community is committed to providing love, care, and a stable home for children who have faced abandonment, abuse, or extreme poverty.

Their Family-Oriented Model

Located amidst the tranquil Illovo Sugar plantation, their community offers not only shelter but also healthcare and counselling support to aid the children’s recovery. Their unique family-oriented model ensures that each child is placed into a home with five other children, under the care of a dedicated house mother who provides them with unconditional love, guidance, and support. This familial structure fosters a sense of belonging and stability, crucial for their emotional and psychological well-being.

Their Impact

Currently, Mother of Peace Johannesburg supports over 30 children, offering them not just a safe space, but also a warm, loving environment where they can thrive. Beyond basic necessities, they focus on education, personal development, and recreational activities. Their children engage in a variety of hobbies, including soccer, board games, and creative activities that encourage social interaction and emotional growth.
